4th International Conference on Biology, Geology and Environment of Hadal Trenches

Bringing together international researchers studying the biology, geology and environmental processes of the world’s deepest ocean trenches

About the conference

The International Conference on Biology, Geology and Environment of Hadal Trenches is a forum for researchers investigating the deepest parts of the ocean. Following three successful meetings hosted by the Institute of Deep-Sea Science and Engineering (IDSSE) in Sanya, China, the fourth conference will be held in Wellington, New Zealand.

The conference brings together participants from the Global Trench Exploration and Diving Programme (Global TREnD), the UN Ocean Decade Global Hadal Exploration Programme (GHEP), and the wider international hadal research community.

Welcome to Aotearoa New Zealand

New Zealand has been a major focus of recent international hadal exploration through surveys of the Kermadec and Puysegur trenches. These expeditions have strengthened international collaborations and expanded understanding of trench biodiversity, geology and environmental processes.
